Melanie Beck – University of Guelph Figure Skating

Academic Advisor, Sports Mentor
Strength lies in asking for help. I am happy that you are here.

I began figure skating when I was 4 years old and soon after began competing nationally on synchronized skating teams. I was a member of the Varsity Figure Skating team at the University of Guelph from 2015-2019 and had to persevere through the physical and mental challenge of sustaining a sports injury within my first year. Concurrently, I held the role of Team Manager for the University of Guelph Varsity Figure Skating Team and was recognized for my excellence, versatility, and devotion to assigned duties within Guelph athletics by being awarded the Cathy Rowe Manager of the Year award in 2019. My role involved liaising between athletes, coaches, and the athletic department and ensuring teammates were supported with their academic goals. In addition, I was an instructor and coordinator for the Learn to Skate Program at the University of Guelph, gaining valuable skills in coaching others using various learning modalities.

After earning a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Applied Human Nutrition, I continued on my education to receive a Diploma in Dietetic Education and Practical Training. I am now a Registered Dietitian and value how holistic care can be used to optimize health and wellbeing, improve quality of life, and support optimal athletic performance. Whether as a mentor, advisor, or practitioner, I use motivational interviewing and goal setting techniques to help empower individuals and support them along their athletic journey. I am currently a member of a competitive synchronized skating team and love that I can still be involved in the sport while using my experiences to help others.
