Mason Coates – Brock University Hockey
My name is Mason Coates, my athletic career like most athletes, came with having to overcome numerous challenges. Throughout my journey, I discovered my true calling in life. Born in Romania, I was adopted and moved to Canada at the age of two and was raised in Burlington, Ontario. At the tender age of 9, my love for hockey ignited, and I fell head over heels for the sport. Determined to play professionally, I poured my heart and soul into honing my skills. My dedication paid off as I earned a spot on multiple rep teams, showcasing my versatility by playing both forward and defence positions. Following my passion for hockey, I pursued higher education at Brock University where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management. This provided me with valuable knowledge in the field of sport. I had the privilege of coaching young kids over the years, imparting to them the fundamentals of hockey and sharing my experiences.
However, life had unexpected plans for me. A career-ending injury forced me to confront a profound existential question: Who was I outside the realm of hockey? This pivotal moment led me on a path of self-discovery, where I explored my other passions and purpose in life.
Driven by an unwavering passion for people and a deep desire to help them navigate life’s struggles, I found my calling. I became a Motivational Speaker and a Certified Life Coach, dedicating myself to empowering individuals to overcome adversity, find their true potential, and to live their lives as their true authentic selves. For the past 7 years, I have been inspiring, motivating, and guiding countless individuals on their personal journeys, sharing my own experiences, and imparting invaluable wisdom. I have transformed my own setbacks into opportunities for growth. I have firsthand experiences with the challenges athletes endure, including but not limited to: mental and emotional stress, politics and team dynamics, balancing education and athletics, injury and recovery, burnout and fatigue, poor coaching or guidance, and financial pressure. The only thing you can control in life is yourself, and your mindset. Your athletic journey is not going to be an easy one, nothing in life that is easy is worth pursuing; but I tell you, it is going to be worth it because it is going to force you to get out of your comfort zone. Dreams are achieved outside the confines of your comfort zone.
