Laura Kay Powell-Olgun – NCAA D1 Gymnastics

Academic Advisor
With my background as an elite gymnast and international educator, I focus on creating strong, supportive connections with student-athletes, helping them navigate both their academic and athletic journeys with care and understanding

I grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, with a passion for sports and an interest in exploring the world. My childhood was spent training as a gymnast, leading to a full athletic scholarship at Iowa State University in the United States. After my gymnastics career, I pursued traveling and completed teacher’s college in Australia. As a secondary school teacher, I specialize in Physical Education, Dance, and Food and Nutrition. I have taught in London, England, and at a British international school in Istanbul, where I also learned Turkish. Currently, I teach in Ottawa, continuing to share my passion for education.

As a competitive gymnast, I competed at the national level in Canada and concluded my Canadian career as the Canadian National Champion at the Open level on beam and floor in 2002. At Iowa State University, I competed as a Division One NCAA gymnast for four years. During my time there, our team won the Big 12 Conference Championships, qualified for the NCAA finals, and placed 6th. Individually, I was named Most Valuable Player in 2004 and 2006, qualified for and placed 8th in the NCAA finals on floor exercise, was the Regional Floor Champion in 2004, and was named to the All-American team in 2005 and 2006 (floor/vault), becoming a four-time All-American.
