Evan Lockwood – NCAA D1 Volleyball

Sports Mentor
The positive impact of athletics goes far beyond the realm of the physical. With the right mindset, and the mentorship of coaches, teammates, and parents, sports can also be one of the greatest teachers in the life of a young athlete. It has always been my privilege to have learned from the greats, and now it is my privilege to pass that knowledge on. I believe that fostering the right supportive learning environment and positive guiding experiences will allow athletes to become trailblazers in their personal and athletic communities.

I have been playing competitive volleyball for 16+ years and coaching athletes of all levels for 10+ years. My growth began as a youth athlete in the United States, where I played on multiple top-tier junior teams and travelled across the country to compete against the best in my age brackets. My career highlights as a competitive athlete include winning U17 and U18 AAU National Championships in-back to-back years, finishing top 10 in U18 Open Nationals, playing for two years on Team Florida, and becoming a First Team All Florida State player for two consecutive years. At a collegiate level I earned a scholarship to play as both libero and setter at the NCAA D1 level McKendree University—competing in the MIVA Conference alongside teams such as Ohio State, Loyola University, and Ball State.

In my aforementioned teams, I always had the privilege to work for amazing coaches whose direction and passion helped mold me into my best version of myself. As such, it has always been my goal to continue providing to others the training and guidance that was critical in my formational years. I am presently an assistant coach for the men’s volleyball team at the OCAA level La Citè College. Additionally, I coach a range of programs at the Maverick’s Volleyball Club in Ottawa, focusing primary on their developmental programs and ensuring that I am a guiding mentor to both the players and the younger coaches alike.

Coaching volleyball, and helping young players in all stages of their athletic careers, is one of my greatest privileges and joys.

I first picked up a tennis racket when I was 4 years old, and started playing competitively at age 8. By the time I was 14 I had reached the top 50 standing in the United States and was travelling across the country and overseas to play in tournaments. While my focus shifted to volleyball during adolescence, I soon came back into the tennis fold during my time at McKendree University, when a volleyball career ending injury gave me the opportunity to go back to my roots. As a walk-on to the collegiate NCAA D2 tennis team, I was put in the unique position of having to work harder than ever in order to catch up with my teammates. After two years of non-stop pushing, I earned a starting position.
