Brian Singson – Canadian Muay Thai

Sports Mentor
“Don’t use that word ‘can’t.’ You can’t say ‘can’t.” - Mike Tyson

I’m Brian Singson, raised in the Scarborough area of Toronto, Ontario. My journey in the combat sports industry has led me to become an athlete mentor at Athletes United. Initially, I was not active and struggled with self-esteem issues related to my weight throughout high school. At 15, I developed an interest in martial arts, starting with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Although I wasn’t initially enthusiastic about BJJ, I quickly fell in love with the striking arts of Muay Thai and Boxing, as the gym I attended had coaches for these disciplines.

Two years after beginning my training, I decided to pursue competition and soon discovered Southside Muay Thai, one of the top Muay Thai gyms in North America. For the next 12 years, I focused most of my energy on Muay Thai, competing in major amateur tournaments in Canada and North America, where I achieved several titles and inspired others to succeed. Balancing competition and teaching came naturally to me, and through this experience, I learned the value of selflessly contributing to the sport. Working with others who share a passion for martial arts helped me understand the importance of dedication, discipline, and teamwork.

Teaching and competing during my late teens and early twenties not only honed my skills but also shaped me into someone dedicated to helping others unlock their true potential. I’ve worked with individuals ranging from those with no athletic or fitness experience to young children, the elderly, and experienced professional and amateur athletes across various martial arts disciplines, helping them overcome challenges in both competition and training.

My journey led me to become one of the head coaches for the Southside Competitive Fight Team, where I emphasize not only technical skills but also companionship, sportsmanship, personal growth, and the traditions of the sport. I’ve helped many athletes, from young to old, achieve their competition goals and realize their full potential, and I continue to do so.
As an athlete mentor, I am a strong advocate for mental health awareness in sports. Reflecting on my own experiences as a fighter from my teen years to the present, I’ve implemented techniques, strategies, and clear communication to support others. Everyone deserves to be heard, and I’ve learned that reaching out for help can make a difference. I am committed to ensuring that people feel understood and are empowered to be the best they can be.
