Anne Wiegers – Professional Field Hockey

Sports Mentor
“Never say never because limits, like fears, are often just illusions.” - Michael Jordan

Hi there! My name is Anne, and I am originally from the Netherlands and moved to Canada in 2022 to do my graduation internship. I fell in love with the Canadian outdoors and now I am a permanent resident. As with many of my colleagues at Athletes United, sport is part of my identity and has been essential in developing the full extent of my character. Having the opportunity to play sports has given me the confidence to learn and try new things, helped me build lifelong friendships, and brought focus and stability to my life. As a result, I have a deep-rooted passion for sport and ensuring that people of all ages, backgrounds and ambitions have the same opportunities to develop these life skills through sport in a healthy and sustainable way. Although it’s hard to explain, I have a natural ability to understand almost any sport, even those I haven’t played. I look forward to working with athletes in any discipline through Athletes United.

I have played sports my entire life, both professionally and recreationally. Field hockey is my sport of choice, which I have played for almost two decades. From the age of 17 I started training with the first ladies’ team in the second league in the Netherlands, later progressing to a full member of the team and eventually playing at the highest competition level. I was captain of the team from 2014 – 2016, and co-captain in 2017 prior to retiring from professional sport. I was a striker, being the top scorer for my team and the league during these years. My strongest point as a professional athlete was having a natural understanding of the game and being able to adjust to conditions of play in real time. Since retiring from field hockey I now play recreational beach volleyball and train in trail running. My dream is to complete “The Artic Triple”, (Ask me what it is when we chat!). My mentor style is “together”. I’m curious and ready to learn new things with my clients. Let’s team up, figure out what you need, and how I can assist you.

I have a degree in International Sport Management & Business which I obtained at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. I completed my minor in “High Performance Sports” with honors, and graduated with my thesis in Sustainable Business Modelling.

During my studies I did 3 internships:
– United Through Sports in Buenos Aires, Argentina
– Challenge Family (Second largest organizer of Triathalons) in Almere, The Netherlands
– TransRockies in Calgary, Alberta
