Academic Advisor

Athletes United is currently accepting applications across Ontario and other provinces in Canada to become an Athletes United practitioner in the fields of Academic Advisement. 

The Academic Advisor Position provides direction to Athletes or teams on how to successfully navigate educational ambitions within the educational system and sporting industry. Academic Advisors act as a guide for athletes or teams to assist in all educational aspects while engaging in sports. Academic Advisor can be a teacher, a sports tutor, an educational adviser, or an educational representative acting on behalf of the athlete.

The key responsibilities of the Mentoring are as follows:

1.0    Academic Advisor

  • (i) assist athletes/coaches and teams to reach their academic potential in their educational journey.
  • (ii) provide a educational liaison relationship to athletes/coaches and teams that supports the holistic well-being of all Athletes United members.
  • (iii) facilitate athletes/coaches in mentally preparing, studying, creating, and maintaining positive environments and improving upon communication skills.
  • (iv) Develop a direct and efficient plan for athletes to achieve desired educational ambitions.
  • (v) Provide direction and support for post secondary applications.
  • (vi) Create an Athletes United post graduate career centre by networking with Industries across Canada.
  • (vii) promote the learning of specific educational enhancement techniques (e.g. imagery, goal setting) for athletes and coaches.
  • (viii) create the ability for athletes/coaches to debrief and evaluate academic results.
  • (ix) maintain client documentation and refer to and arrange follow-up as necessary.
  • (x) Academic Advisors are prohibited in facilitating a health care plan or assisting in any physical or verbal healthcare advice.

2.0    Organizational Processes

  • (i) be informed of the policies, procedures, and practices of Athletes United.
  • (ii) contribute to the efficient functioning of the organization and the attainment of goals.
  • (iii) manage organizational priorities as necessary to perform tasks.

4.0    Collaboration and Teamwork

  • (i) promote awareness of Athletes United services and programs. Participate in staff and team meetings of Athletes United and community meetings; and

5.0    Communications

  • (i) communicate effectively with interdisciplinary Athletes United health professionals and mentors to create a cohesive team and seamless transition of academic services for the athlete.
  • (ii) communicate effectively with all clients, families, peers, other health care professionals and community partner organizations.

7.0    Related Duties

  • (i) maintain confidentiality of colleague and client information.
  • (ii) assist with planning and attend special events; and
  • (iii) perform other associated duties as requested by the Director of Education
  1. AUTHORITY

The authority delegated to the Academic Advisor by the Director of Education is as follows:

  • (i) liaise colleagues and community partner organizations to support the academic development and post graduate careers of clients served.
  1. ACCOUNTABILITY

The Sports Mentor is accountable to the Director of Education as follows:

  • (i) maintain the best interests of the client served by carrying out their duties and obligations with fairness, integrity and objectivity.
  • (ii) demonstrate competence and excellence in Academic Advising and
  • (iii) respect and maintain confidentiality of all professionally acquired information.
  1. QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications of the Sports Mentoring are as follows:

1.0    Educational Requirements and Professional Certifications

  • (i) Preferred Graduate degree in counselling, career development, education or social sciences from a recognized university.

2.0    Experience, Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • (i) Canada/United Sates College/University sporting experience or higher (Requirement)
  • (ii) Passionate about empowering Athletes in age 10+
  • (iii) Passionate about creating global community through sports.
  • (iv) Outstanding interpersonal communication skills and cross-cultural awareness
  • (v) Experienced in problem-solving and thinking on the fly,
  • (vi) Highly adaptable
  • (vii) Team-oriented
  • (viii) Excellent communicator
  • (ix) Confidence leading group educational activities (i.e. classroom-setting workshops, small group discussions)
  • (x) Views leadership as a service to themselves and others
  • (xi) Ability to create a safe learning environment.
  • (xii) Views challenges as opportunities
  • (xiii) Assumes ownership and responsibility in all settings.
  • (xiv) proficiency in the use of computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • (xv) prior experience and knowledge of competitive sports associations.
  • (xvi) desire and ability to update knowledge and skills through various means including technology-based opportunities, courses, workshops and conferences.
  • (xvii) multi-tasking skills related to the delivery of efficient sporting experience including the ability to share information and teach while advising athletes and coaches.
  • (xviii) excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
  • (xix) exhibit an ability to be open and non-judgmental.

  1. WORKING CONDITIONS

The working conditions for the Mentoring are as follows:

  • (i) work environment will primarily be virtual with Athletes United branding required.
  • (ii) attend meetings in community settings.
  1. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

Specific employment conditions of the Sports mentoring include the following:

  • (i) valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
  1. SALARY LEVEL: $30,000 – $70,000
