Andrew Fry – Jr. B All Star Hockey Team

Sports Social Worker
Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen. --Michael Jordan

Andrew has always enjoyed being active and has participated in many sports, with hockey remaining a significant part of his life. His hockey career is highlighted by his three years with the Owen Sound Grey’s Jr. B team, where he made the League All-Star team during his rookie season. As his focus shifted to academics, Andrew continued his competitive hockey career, playing two years with the Kincardine Bulldogs Jr. C team. There, he earned the league’s Most Valuable Defenseman award, as well as his team’s Most Valuable Defenseman and Most Sportsmanlike Player honors. Andrew concluded his competitive playing career with the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks Sr. B team, where they captured the Sr. B “AA” Championship.

Injuries, work, and starting a family with his wife Sandra eventually took precedence, leading to the end of his competitive playing days. However, Andrew continues to play in a local adult competitive hockey league and spends many hours at the arena cheering on and coaching his two sons in hockey and lacrosse.

A pivotal moment in Andrew’s playing career was a meeting with a sports therapist, which had a lasting impact on both his athletic and personal life. The insights and skills he gained from this experience helped him manage performance anxiety, achieve consistency, and boost his confidence. This encounter ultimately influenced his education and career path.

Andrew has 15 years of experience working with youth and families in community mental health and educational settings. He strives to blend his experience as a former competitive athlete with his education in Recreation and Leisure Studies and a Master of Social Work degree. His training in mental health and evidence-based modalities fuels his passion for helping others achieve their optimal best in both sports and everyday life.
