Sports Psychologist

Athletes United is currently accepting applications across Ontario and other provinces in Canada to become an Athletes United practitioner in the fields of Sport Psychology.

QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications of the Sport Psychologist are as follows:

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • develop and implement individualized primary care plans of athletes/coaches based on evidence-informed practices in collaboration with other interdisciplinary health professionals; 
  • assist athletes/coaches to reach their performance potential in sport and/or other aspects of life;
  • aid in teaching athletes/coaches to regulate arousal, stress, and/or emotions Improve as well as confidence, motivation, and concentration;
  • facilitate athletes/coaches in mentally planning for training and competitions, creating and maintaining positive environments and improving upon communication skills;
  • promote the learning of specific performance enhancement techniques (e.g. imagery, goal-setting) for athletes and coaches
  • assist athletes/coach in improving recovery and regeneration;
  • create the ability for athletes/coaches to debrief and evaluate performances or programs;
  • aid in an athletes’ and coach’s ability to rehabilitate from an injury;

Educational Requirements and Professional Certifications

  • post graduate degree in Sport Psychology or related field from a recognized university;
  • member in good standing with the Canadian Sport Psychology Association; and
  • proof of professional liability insurance.

Experience, Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • three (3) years counselling/therapy experience preferably in a community setting;
  • demonstrated proficiencies in assessment, psychotherapy and psychological counselling techniques for working with athletes and coaches;
  • experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation;
  • knowledge and proficiency in current, evidence-informed methods and practices of primary care delivery, with an emphasis on health promotion and risk reduction;
  • proven leadership, organization, research, evaluation, time management, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • proficiency in the use of the computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Word and Excel; 
  • prior experience and knowledge of competitive sports associations;
  • desire and ability to update knowledge and skills through various means including technology-based opportunities, courses, workshops and conferences;
  • multi-tasking skills related to the delivery of efficient primary care including the ability to share information and teach while treating athletes and coahces;
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
  • exhibit an ability to be open and non-judgmental.
